Reconsidering Fast Fashion

Most people who come into our showroom are taken back when they first walk in…

They hear the sound of sewing machines, scissors cutting against a big wood table and workers talking to one another about a dress or their families. Our showroom is definitely not the norm when brides think of wedding dress shopping and we really love that. What surprises people is that when you meet with us, we are the makers of your gown. Our team is comprised of sewers, designers, alteration specialists and pattern makers. We are there from start to finish. From concept to execution. And with that, comes the beauty of slow fashion.

When our brides {and their tribe} see the dress being made by hand and with love… there is something magical within that process. To know that each item is being taken care of is something we pride ourselves on and we want our brides to feel that love throughout the process… not just on the day of their wedding. Slow fashion is amazing, rewarding and unique. For any brides or clients considering shopping small and local… we say DO IT! You will not regret your decision.

Now… some quotes to stir up the fast fashion cycle….

  • “When an industry doesn’t care about how people are treated, no consideration of sustainability is possible. You can’t just care about the environment and forget about the fair and ethical treatment of people.” —Simone Cipriani, founder of International Trade Centre’s Ethical Fashion Initiative (Thomas Reuters Foundation 2016)
  • “What if we started by slowing down and not consuming so much stuff, just because it’s there and cheap and available. It’s amazing how that process makes sense financially, it makes sense ethically, it makes sense environmentally.” —Andrew Morgan, filmmaker and director of ‘The True Cost’ (The Guardian 2015
  • “Fast fashion isn’t free. Someone, somewhere is paying.” —Lucy Siegle, journalist and author
  • “There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness.”  —Mahatma Gandhi
  • “Fast fashion is like fast food. After the sugar rush it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.”  —Livia Firth, ethical fashion advocate and founder of sustainable fashion consultancy Eco-Age
  • “What is ethical fashion? It’s a confusing term. Sometimes it’s easier to define by what it isn’t – and unfortunately that is most of what can be found on the high street. Unethical fashion means very very little transparency, accountability and knowledge of the supply chain. It means demands of very quick lead times and production turnaround. It means producers played off against each other. It means a wage that doesn’t even afford the worker an adequate salary for two meals a day.”—Safia Minney, fair trade fashion pioneer, author and founder of People Tree (The Guardian 2008)
  • “As consumers we have so much power to change the world by just being careful in what we buy.” —Emma Watson, actress and ethical fashion advocate
  • “Demand quality not just in the products you buy, but in the life of the person who made it.” —Orsola de Castro, designer and cofounder of Fashion Revolution

ATTENTION outdoor enthusiasts and people who love to volunteer!

Our friends from Say Events are pairing up with Cystic Fibrosis to help the 14th Annual GearUp4CF fundraising cycling event. At this event, riders can choose from a 1-day ride from Crescent Beach in White Rock to Chilliwack, or choose our more challenging 2-day ride to beautiful Manning Park near Hope from Saturday, June 22 to Sunday, June 23. GearUp4CF is a supported ride and has raised nearly $2 million since it started! Volunteers are also needed… all help is welcome!

We highly recommend that you take a look into this amazing event that our friends are a part of! Join them as they raise even more to achieve our vision of a world without cystic fibrosis.
